Artist Profile
Susan Kazlow Friedland was a young girl when her journey as an artist began. Each week her family took short
trips into rural areas outside of Savannah. They had leisurely picnics and were often joined by a friend who was an artist. This
treasured family friend showed Susan the intrinsic beauty in ordinary items: a broken down chicken coop, a single flower or blade
of grass. Each had a unique beauty in its shape and form and usefulness. These early teachings fueled two great passions: catching
the world through her camera lens and collecting ordinary items that strike her artist's eye.
Photography is at the core of Susan Friedland's artistic endeavors. Her work covers a wide range of subjects
and continues to surprise and delight the viewer. In December 2002, Susan's photograph, "You Say Tomato," won First Place in the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Travel Photography Contest, in the Places Category. She graduated with a B.A. in Fine Arts from
Oberlin College and has taught photography and art for more than ten years.
Ms. Friedland incorporates her photography and love of "found items" into a mixed medium by creating original
shadowboxes. Starting with a piece of her own photography as an inspirational centerpiece, she uses found objects to build a story.
Each item is chosen specifically to expand upon the idea suggested in the photo. She then combines color, form and texture to
arrive at a completely unique vision. Energy, curiosity, and spirit have encouraged her to create a style all her own.
Susan Kazlow Friedland's work is owned by collectors throughout the Southeast, including law offices in Atlanta
and the private collection of Sir Elton John. Susan lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and three children.
